The ski season rules here. February is the priciest, at the peak of winter, when rates rise by more than half against the yearly average. May is the cheapest, the dead spell between skiing and summer, when prices fall by about half and many lifts are closed. Summer is the second season, for hiking and views, dearer than spring but cheaper than winter. The day matters too: Sunday is the cheapest and Tuesday the most expensive. Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more

Zermatt is small and all within a walk or an electric bus ride, so price comes down to the standard and the Matterhorn view more than the district. The very centre along the main Bahnhofstrasse holds the highest rates, with the restaurants, shops and the lifts close by. It is cheaper a little higher up and away from the main street, while the most atmospheric part is the old Hinterdorf quarter with its historic barns. Many places advertise rooms with a view of the peak, which lifts the price. With free buses and a compact layout, a stay outside the centre is still convenient.
